Heaves, or Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO) is generally caused in horses by an allergic reaction to particles in the air, such as dust or mold. Common signs include coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. If your horse is struggling to breathe, they need veterinary care NOW! (Call your emergency vet immediately!)
If your horse suffers from RAO, keeping them in an environment free from moldy hay and excessive dust is a must. Often times, horses with heaves to better outside, as opposed to stalled in an enclosed barn. A horse with Heaves may be permanently limited in their activity and commonly requires a strict medication schedule.
